New Zealand GST Rate

How much is GST in NZ? In New Zealand we pay a goods and services tax of 15%. GST is a tax added to most goods and services including imports. As a consumer you pay GST when purchasing, this GST is passed onto the government. If you are a seller of products you will charge GST to your customers.

How do I calculate GST in NZ?

You can use our calculator above but if you want to manually calculate GST, the formulas are below

Calculate the GST Inclusive Amount

When you have a price which does not include GST, to get the GST inclusive amount you add 15%. Using your calculator with a non GST price of $100 you would do the following.

  1. $100 x 0.15 = $15 – this is your GST amount
  2.  Add the $15 to your GST exclusive price of $100 and your GST inclusive price is $115

Calculate the GST Exclusive Amount

If you’ve already got the GST inclusive price and you want to know the GST exclusive price use the formula below.

  1. Multiply the purchase price by 3
  2. Divide that number by 23

For a GST inclusive price of $200, on your calculator you would do the following.

  1. $200 x 3 = $600
  2. $600 / 23 = $26.09 (round to the nearest cent)
  3. $200 – $26.09 = $173.91 (This is your GST exclusive amount)
